Notes from Meeting, revised theme, next steps n more

All,

Good three hour meeting on Monday. Champions. Notes from that meeting are here

So I’ve pulled all the ideas from the meeting together, and attempted to make a coherent theme from them. Some ideas didn’t make it, some we’ll have to wait to see if we have the time/resources to execute others.

A caveat: I’m trying to keep the parlour from becoming completely victorian or completely circus themed. We’re doing a mash up of different genres (akin to Coppola’s Marie Antoinette if you need a visual)- and are creating something a bit different then what people are used to. I’ve tried to keep the theme from weighing too heavily on just one genre.

The new theme can be accessed  here

I’ve also made the decision to push the show back to Saturday, October 15th. This date gives us one more week to prepare, and fits in better with several SA staff’s schedules. Let me know if that’s absolutely does not work for you.

The updated calendar is here

I’ve also created a lookbook to guide everyone with their outfit’s for the parlour. I’d prefer that we stick to the same colour palette and that some roles (such as event assist, and the bar) wear matching/similarly colored outfits. Lookbook is here

All docs and links can be found under documents on the SA tumblr side bar, or under their respective headings.

Oop (updated)

Added a few more things, clarified the roles. I had to create a new position, Community Engagement. This position will be working closely with ethics and production (which has a page now), this position also needs a volunteer.

I’ve assigned some of you to roles we’ve sorta thrown around, there should be no surprises.

Ethics: Char and Talia

Community Engagement: Jess and Kristen

Production: Alisha, Anna, Michele

Media + PR: Brent

Arts + Crafts: Catherine, Kristen, Clare, and whomever else that can lend a hand.

Entertainment: Kerrie (there may be a conflict with bar duties on the day of), Alisha

Bar: Kerrie and Jess

Event Assist: Clare, Kristen (when not doing CE), Char (if in town), Catherine

Oh and let me know if I’m being nuts with all of this- it seems clearly defined roles work well for us + delegating tasks makes me less crazy/hard to work with in the long run

A Note about Collaboration

So the site is up, but it is not the site. Feel free to think of your own ideas for the next SA and post them to google +, facebook, or what have you. What I’ve put up are my own ideas, we don’t necc have to have a pervy pastel and striped drenched parlour.

Just for godsakes lets not do rockabilly burlesque, it’s so fucking overdone.

Nice Cream + New State Crackdown on Artisan Ice Cream

Kitty first brought this to my attention last week, the state of Illinois is starting to crackdown on artisan ice cream producers (what SA is supposed to turn into) citing health and sanitation concerns. You can read the article in full here

As Kerrie and Kitty know, I had a bit of a freak out about this. I’d love to have an ice cream/beignet shop and I feel a little…defeated learning all this.Part of our mission is education on the food system/justice, and this is a perfect example of miseducation (to properly make custard ice cream one has to achieve the right consistency, coincidentally this consisentcy is achieved at the same temperature that kills salmonella, E. Coli, etc) and the government (who is siding with large, multi state ice cream producers such as Haagen Daz, Coldstone, etc) dictating food choices.

AND, this completely sabotages the burgeoning urban ag/local farm movement and alternative food system. Nice Cream used local milk, produce, and sourced out baking to other area bakeries that shared her mission. In the process she educated the consumer about urban ag, local business, and a new model for doing business- simply by being the best at what she does.

*breathe*

I say all that to say this, SA is needed now more than ever. I’m a bit concerned with the increasing illegality of this operation and will be taking more precautions in the future. Upon my return to Chicago I’ll be enrolling in a ServSafe class and recieving a Chicago food license. I’m considering getting liability insurance and producing ice cream at Logan Square kitchen. We’re going to be completely transparent about how the ice cream is produced and our reasons for doing such.

That is all.

Updated Mission Statement

There’s been a bit of a communication break on SA’s mission. This is mostly my fault as I’ve been refining, procrastinating and trying to find the right words to describe what is we actually do. Take a look {check le sidebar}, give me feedback. This is as much your project as it is mine.
